Night Sky & Dark Environments

NIGHT SKY AND DARK ENVIRONMENTS: BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR ARTIFICIAL LIGHT AT NIGHT ON BLM-MANAGED LANDS TECHNICAL NOTE 457 10 2.6 Night Sky and Darkness Values in Relation to BLM-Managed Lands The darkest skies in the U.S. are in western states and associated with BLM-managed public lands. Figure 1 shows maps of artificial night sky brightness derived from Falchi et al. 2016. Black areas on the maps have the least artificial light and the darkest skies, which makes sense, given the relatively few people and general lack of industrial development on western federal public lands.
