Skin Cancer Prevention 2019

30 2019 Skin Cancer Prevention Progress Report Sunscreen Access in Schools The FDA regulates sunscreen as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug product. In many school districts, students’ ability to carry or use FDA-regulated OTC drug products of any kind while on school property is restricted, unintentionally creating barriers to adequate sun protection for students. Realizing this concern, some states have passed legislation permitting students to carry and self-apply sunscreen while at school. As of July 2019, 22 states have passed legislation allowing students to carry and self-apply sunscreen during school (Figure 8).30, 31 Figure 8 State Laws for Sunscreen Use in Schools, as of July 2019 WA OR ID MT WY UT NV CA AZ AK NC SC NM CO GA PA NY ND SD NE KY KS OK TX AL VA WV NJ DE NH MA RI VT CT ME MD DC TN MS MO IA WI MN MI OH IN IL LA AR HI FL States Allowing Sunscreen Use in Schools 2019 No legislation in place Sunscreen legislation in place Source: Adapted from Patel & Holman, 201831 and information on the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association website.30
